Join the Fun: Wisconsin Sandhill Deer Hunt Applications Open Now!

Wisconsin outdoor activities Mixed Bag logo design.

Applications Now Open for Sandhill Deer Hunt Program

If the thought of hunting and camaraderie in Wisconsin's sprawling forests excites your inner adventurer, mark your calendars! The Wisconsin DNR is accepting online applications until July 1 for the 2025 Sandhill Wildlife Area learn-to-hunt program for deer. With its picturesque 9,150-acre grounds, Sandhill is set to host an engaging experience for those aged 12-15, as well as adults (16+) without prior hunting experience. What's more, if you need a favorite chaperone to tag along, they’ll be more than welcome, albeit the $40 registration fee is on you.

Completing a hunter education course is a must before grabbing your gear. Let’s face it, you wouldn’t mix the ingredients for a casserole without a recipe, right? And similarly, before heading into the wild, it’s essential to know the ropes! The program culminates in a two-day hunt scheduled for November 8-9, where budding hunters will finally put all their newly acquired skills to the test.

Hunting with Purpose: The Importance of Mentorship

This isn’t just about hunting – it’s about forging connections and relationships through shared experiences. The Sandhill program offers classroom sessions infused with stories that not only teach the rules of the hunt but also inspire respect for the environment. Imagine the stories you’ll tell around the campfire after spending time in the company of like-minded individuals: “Did I ever tell you about the time I mistook a tree for a deer?” People bond over these laughs, and as we know, laughter is the best seasoning!

Hosting Deer Hunters with Disabilities: An Inspiring Initiative

As Wisconsin aims to promote inclusivity, the DNR encourages landowners with at least 60 acres available to apply for hosting deer hunters with disabilities for the upcoming hunt from October 4-12. Since its inception in 1992, this initiative has provided hunting opportunities for over 400 disabled hunters each year. Why don’t we take a minute to applaud this fantastic program? It’s stories like these that make the Wisconsin outdoors truly special. So, if you have the land and the heart, this could be the perfect opportunity for you to give back to the community.

Asking the Experts: Wisconsin's Very Own Doug Duren

In the spotlight this year is Doug Duren of Cazenovia, who recently received the esteemed National Deer Association (NDA) Deer Manager of the Year Award. Now, that’s a title that will turn heads on the trail! Doug's dedication to managing the deer population and their habitats showcases a deep commitment to preserving our beautiful state’s natural heritage. Who knew that being a deer whisperer had its perks? So, if you see him around, be sure to thank him for his hard work. Because remember: the only thing better than a good hunt is knowing that hunting remains sustainable for years to come and you weren’t just chasing ghosts!

Dive into the Adventure Tourism of Wisconsin

While you’re at it, why not look beyond deer hunting? Wisconsin boasts an array of outdoor activities from fishing and hiking to snowmobiling and mountain biking. With places like Kettle Moraine for trails and Door County for kayak adventures, outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy a buffet of options that cater to every adventurer's palate. You can also delve into Wisconsin's grandeur, from the snow-dusted peaks perfect for downhill skiing to the stunning fall foliage that colors our landscapes. Remember: if you're worried about missing out on the best vistas, an adventure in Wisconsin truly has it all – summer or winter, and everything in between!

Pack Your Gear and Embrace the Outdoors

Your adventure begins when you step into the great outdoors. So get your gear together and let your spirit soar! Whether you're a prospector of peace or a thrill-seeker hunting down bugs (literal or metaphorical), Wisconsin's wild corners await your exploration. Just make sure to wear shoes that don’t make you feel like you’re walking on hot coals after an hour. An adventure isn’t worth it if your feet scream louder than you do!

To all outdoor enthusiasts in Wisconsin, your window of opportunity is wide open! Whether you decide to partake in the Sandhill deer hunt, host a wheelchair-accessible hunt, or just roam through the verdant trails we call home, adventure is a heartbeat away! So gear up, get outdoors, and dive into the magic that Wisconsin has to offer.

Why South Dakota Waterfowl Hunting Should Be on Your Bucket List

Update Why South Dakota is a Waterfowl Hunter's Paradise When you think about premier waterfowl hunting destinations, South Dakota might not spring to mind first, but it deserves a top spot on your bucket list. With its rich history as part of the U.S. Prairie Pothole Region, South Dakota is a crucial stop for migrating ducks. Its wetlands, known as the "duck factory," are a breeding ground for numerous species of waterfowl, making it a must-visit for both novice and seasoned hunters alike. Just as a duck cannot quack without a good puddle to splash in, a hunter cannot experience true joy without making a trip to this vibrant land. Understanding the Nonresident License Lottery Before packing your camo and decoys, let’s tackle the elephant in the room: the lottery system for nonresident licenses. Yes, if you’re a nonresident eager to join the feathered fun, you need to enter the much-discussed lottery, which usually takes place in late spring or early summer. “If I could have a dollar for every hunter who forgets about that little detail…” said my buddy Bill, “I’d have enough for a lifetime supply of decoys!” So mark your calendars and prepare your lucky charm because if you didn’t catch it this year, there’s always 2027—just make sure you’re not chasing your ducks after the season has closed! When's the Best Time to Duck Hunt? The best time to experience the mind-boggling waterfowl extravaganza in South Dakota is during the heart of the fall migration. Think of it like a duck's version of Black Friday; the deals are everywhere, but timing is crucial! Between September and November, you can see skies darkened by masses of migrating birds while they flock toward the Prairie Pothole Region. On occasion, you might find yourself overwhelmed by a flurry of blue-winged teal—so fast you might think the ducks just got a supercharged caffeine boost! The Experience of Hunting Duck Now, the real question is, what’s it like to hunt ducks in South Dakota? Picture this: You wake up at dawn, the sun stretches over the grasslands, casting a golden hue all around. The crisp air tickles your nose as you greet your fellow hunters. The sounds of nature ramping up is like a symphony preparing for a concert. You might even think of breaking out in a happy jig! As you take your position and lay out decoys, the serenity will wash over you, until the first swamp quacks break that tranquility, and suddenly, it’s a scene of frenetic excitement—it’s footloose and fancy fowl time! Let me tell you, shooting limits of blue-wings is one heck of a way to boost your happiness index. The Legacy of South Dakota Waterfowl Hunting Waterfowl hunting in South Dakota isn’t just a seasonal activity; it’s a beloved tradition shared by generations. The camaraderie around the campfire, the shared tales of epic hunts, and the classic showdown of who can tell the tallest duck story, make this experience one for the ages. According to the chats around my favorite local diner back home in Wisconsin, many say that taking part in a South Dakota duck hunt is akin to participating in an outdoor rite of passage—like going to summer camp, except instead of playing capture the flag, you’re strategically capturing ducks! Planning Your Adventure: Tips and Tidbits Ready to take the plunge into the South Dakota duck hunting scene? Here are some tips to ensure a memorable experience. First, connect with local guides; they’ve got the inside scoop on the best spots and times to hunt. Think of them as the Dumbledores of the duck world—just without the beard (unless you’re lucky). Secondly, don’t forget to pack for changing weather; it can be as unpredictable as a duck’s flight path. And finally, always remember to enjoy the serene moments amidst the hunt. As my grandpa always told me, “Why take life too seriously? You’ll never get out alive!” So, what are you waiting for? South Dakota is calling your name and it’s quacking up a storm with opportunity. If nothing else, your friends will be jealous of the stories (and photos) of your successful days but will they ever compare to the adventures you’ll have? Get in on the action; you won’t regret it! Pack your bags, grab that nonresident license, and head to South Dakota for an unforgettable hunting experience! Making Memories and the Call to Action As we wrap it up, remember: waterfowl hunting isn’t just about the ducks; it’s about the adventure, the friendships, and the memories made. As you prepare for your hunt, don’t forget to book some time in the great outdoors, whether that leads you to Wisconsin camping sites or angling in our lakes to hone your fishing skills before heading out. Get involved, explore new activities in Wisconsin, and embrace the beauty of its nature. Because when it comes down to it, adventure is just waiting for you to dive in—much like a duck after a wayward frog!

Prepare for the 2026 Waterfowl Season with Essential Gear and Laughs

Update The Hunt Is On: Gear Up for the Waterfowl SeasonWith the 2026 waterfowl season fast approaching, it’s time for hunters across Wisconsin to dust off their gear—not that they’d mind if they accidentally substituted the dust for some of that sweet duck sauce! This year’s gear wish list covers everything from the essentials to the extravagant, ensuring you're not just communicating with ducks but doing it in style. And who doesn’t love a little quack with their fashion?Must-Have Gadgets for Every WaterfowlerFirst, let’s dive into some must-have gadgets that even your grandma would be impressed by. Have you heard about the latest in electronic calls? These devices are quite literally music to a waterfowler’s ears. Imagine a symphony of quacks, whistles, and honks echoing through the marsh. It’s safer than karaoke night, I promise! Pair that prototype with the newest in camouflage gear, and you’ll be blending into the surroundings so well, even the ducks will have to do a double-take. With such high-tech options, it’s almost like you can have a waterfowl choir ready to serenade those passing birds. Hopefully, they won’t mistake it for a new reality show just yet!The Ultimate Comfort ZoneNo one likes to be uncomfortable while trying to bag the elusive mallard. Investing in top-notch waders is a key factor here. Think of them as your personal floating fortress, keeping you warm and dry as you navigate marshy battlegrounds. I mean, nothing screams ‘I’m a serious hunter’ like waterlogged socks. Trust me; wet feet kill the vibe faster than a bad pun! If you’re not yet convinced, consider adding these stylish, yet functional, camo gloves that double as handwarmers. Because who says you can’t have both form and function? Look, your fingers will need all the warmth they can get during those cool Wisconsin mornings, especially when everyone else is still waking up in their cozy beds. Plus, with those gloves, your grip on the shotgun will be just perfect, and possibly ready for a selfie when you finally land that trophy bird!On the Edge of Advanced TechnologyWe can’t overlook technological advances in hunting gear. This season, look out for GPS-enabled tracking devices. Not only will you keep tabs on your game, but they also double as a way to avoid that one buddy who insists on wearing a bright orange hat that signals, “I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing!” Add in a smart coolant for your drinks that keeps your beverage icy through the hunt, and you’re set! Just don’t be like that one guy who networked with his ducks and forgot to show up for dinner. Instead, you’ll be sipping a frosty beverage while watching the birds come in, like a boss! The right gear makes all the difference between squawking like a duck and hunting with the precision of a hawk. What Makes Wisconsin Knockout Gear Unique?Wisconsin is known for its diverse hunting environments—from wetlands to forests. That’s why seeking local outdoor gear shops is so essential. Not only do they know what works best in Badger State conditions, but they can also help you support the local economy while gearing up for those majestic migrations. Plus, shopping local means more chances to hear some legendary hunting tales, giving you all the right vibes for this season! You might even pick up a tip or two, like the secret to keeping your decoys from sinking faster than your buddy on a first date. And trust me, nothing feels more fulfilling than helping the economy while ensuring you’re dressed to impress for the ducks!Take Advantage of Wisconsin's BountyAs you explore your options from the lush Wisconsin state parks to the stunning national forests, don’t forget that adventure also comes with its share of challenges—think of it as hunting for a needle in a haystack that also quacks! Wisconsin's waters are teeming with not just game birds but opportunities for breathtaking photography, fishing, and other outdoor festivals. Why not gear up and prepare not just for hunting, but for an adventure-filled season serving up both sport and scenery? I mean, it’s all about making memories—preferably ones that don’t involve yet another missed shot or an embarrassing trip into the water!Paddle Power for Waterfowl HuntersIf you find yourself yearning for something different, maybe kayaking to your spot instead of trudging through the muck is your thing. Whisk yourself away on Wisconsin’s scenic rivers, blending both a hunting trip and an unexpected As-You-GO adventure! Bring that kayak into play and commit to boating like it’s the newest dance craze, because let’s be honest, duck hunting doesn’t always rank high in “most graceful activities”! Plus, you’ll get to see the beauty of nature without having to walk like you’re in a swamp-themed obstacle course.Final Thoughts: Laugh, Learn, and Live Fully! As we steer towards the 2026 season, let’s commit to being prepared but also to having fun. Remember, every trip into the wetlands is a chance to catch some (hopefully) hilarious moments that become cherished stories. Whether you’re bagging birds or dodging the embarrassing slip and fall while setting up decoys, be sure to embrace every laugh along the way. And as any seasoned waterfowler will tell you, if you can’t laugh at yourself... well, who’s left to laugh at the ducks? Plus, laughter is the best gear—especially when that just is light enough to float on water!Ready, Set, Gear Up!Now that your wish list is longer than the Half-Pipe at the Olympics, it’s time to gear up for your 2026 Wisconsin waterfowl adventures! Don’t just wing it—make it an adventure! And who knows? You might land a duck or two—and at the very least, you’ll walk away with stories that have more duck jokes than any comedy club could handle!

Sonar Expert Rick Krueger Solved Wisconsin's 45-Year Mystery Of Missing Men

Update Unraveling a 45-Year Mystery: The Disappearance of Ronald Wick and Carl Stolz In the heart of Wisconsin's rolling hills and shimmering lakes lies a mystery that gripped the state for 45 years. The unexplained disappearance of Ronald Wick and Carl Stolz in February 1961 cast a long shadow over local communities and haunted families until sonar expert Rick Krueger stepped in to untangle the thread. Old cars, new technology, and a dash of adventure brought closure to a tale that seemed tangled in time. One would think a story like this could only be scripted in a Hollywood movie or cunning novel, but no, it was right in our backyard, where nature and human stories converge. The Pond of Forgotten Dreams: Lake Waubesa Picture this: Lake Waubesa, a sizeable sparkling body of water amidst the quaint beauty of southern Wisconsin, where summer days are spent boating, fishing, and enjoying family picnics. But beneath its serene surface lie two sunken secrets. In 2006, the lake revealed a 1950 Ford coupe, resting quietly on the floor, housing the remains of two young men who were full of life back in the '60s. One can almost hear the echoes of laughter and music drifting from that car on a warm summer night. Now, how did Krueger, a man with a passion for both the outdoors and technology, become the unlikely hero of this endeavor? With the skills of a modern-day Indiana Jones, he dived into solving a case that had puzzled detectives, families, and even amateur sleuths. How Technology Unearthed the Past Krueger's secret weapon? Sonar technology that could not only map the lake's depths but also identify the shape of submerged vehicles. As an outdoor enthusiast, he combined his love for adventure with tech-savvy innovations. Navigating the lakes was like solving a delightful puzzle, with each sonar sendout like casting a line into the water, hoping for a catch. Using sonar scanning, he painstakingly surveyed the lake, transforming the murky waters into a landscape of past memories, revealing what had lain hidden for decades. Think of Krueger as a modern-day treasure hunter, but instead of gold, he was uncovering human stories. With every scan, he unknowingly rekindled connections for families desperate for closure and hope. This technology allows not just for exploration but also for revitalization of community bonds, reminding us that even in serenity, there can be remnants of tragedy. It’s as if Krueger was performing a watery resurrection, bringing two souls back into the fold of remembrance—and isn’t that something to cheer for? Wisconsin's Outdoor Culture: More Than Just Lakes and Trails Wisconsin isn't just about serene lakes—it's a veritable playground for outdoor enthusiasts. Imagine biking on groomed trails, the wind whooshing past your ears, or casting a fishing line on a quiet river, just you and nature, competing against the sounds of a loon's lonely call. Krueger’s efforts resonate deeply with those who revel in Wisconsin's outdoor culture. From the adventurous kayaker navigating the wild currents of the Wisconsin River to the family camper squished around a campfire in one of the many camping sites at state parks, the enthusiasm for the outdoors is contagious. The laughs shared over crackling wood are as timeless as the lakes themselves. With 675 state parks, forests, and reserves, the opportunities for adventure seem endless! Take a hike through the pristine wilderness during the vibrant fall foliage or join the snowmobilers racing through white winter wonderlands, snow swirling like confetti in celebration of Wisconsin's natural beauty. And don't forget, if you ever find a raccoon wearing a tiny bomber jacket; it's probably just a smartly-dressed critter looking for a ride! Why This Story Matters So why should you care about two men who disappeared more than four decades ago? Their story shines a light not just on tragic loss but also on how the determination of individuals like Krueger, fueled by a love for nature and a knack for technology, can weave a pathway toward closure. It's about family, friendship, and keeping memories alive even in the face of time's relentless march. Remember, if trees could talk, what tales those old oaks could tell! This narrative connects us to the larger story of preserving our environment, forging community bonds, and keeping history alive. It serves as a powerful reminder: the outdoors can hold stories, mysteries, and untold histories waiting to be uncovered. And you never know when your perfect camping trip might turn into an a-ha moment of recognition and recollection. Our Call to Adventure If this tale has inspired you, it’s the perfect moment to plan your outdoor adventure in Wisconsin, whether it’s hiking up to a breathtaking overlook, testing out canoeing rivers, or exploring biking trails—all while keeping an eye out for a raccoon in a bomber jacket, of course! Get out there and experience the beauty and mystery of Wisconsin—who knows what secrets the countryside still holds? And in the spirit of adventure, remember: the only bad adventure is the one you didn’t take! So lace up your hiking boots, grab your fishing rod, and let's explore the vast treasures still waiting to be unearthed in the great outdoors of Wisconsin. After all, what do you call a fisherman who tells tall tales? A reel-y good storyteller!
