Wisconsin Hunters Celebrate High Success Rates in 2025 Elk Season
Listen up, outdoor enthusiasts! The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has officially wrapped up its eighth managed elk hunt, and let me tell you, it was a rip-roaring success! Opening on October 18 and concluding on December 19, 2025, this year's season brought joy to 13 lucky hunters who got to experience the thrill of the chase.
The Hunt: A Celebration of Excitement and Skill
Imagine this: out of more than 26,000 eager applicants, only 13 state-licensed hunters were randomly chosen to partake in this adventure. What were they hunting you ask? Only the majestic elk, the reigning kings of Wisconsin's wilderness! According to Christina Kizewski, DNR Central Elk Zone biologist, it was truly special to witness the excitement from each participant. As Mike the hunter said afterwards, “That bull was bigger than the turkey I’m still trying to catch on Thanksgiving!”
Successful Harvests: Numbers That Impress
This year saw a total of seven bull elk and five antlerless elk harvested from two regions: the Clam Lake (Northern) and Black River (Central) Elk Ranges. With an established quota allowing for an eight-bull harvest in the Clam Lake Elk Range, hunters were delighted to find success early. In the first two weeks alone, all four state-licensed hunters didn’t walk home empty-handed! And the Black River Elk Range? They hit the jackpot with a perfect harvest rate for antlerless elk.
Why Elk Management Matters
So, what’s the big deal about hunting elk, you might wonder? Apart from the adrenaline rush of a successful hunt, elk management helps maintain the population balance in these beautiful wooded areas. Each $10 application fee contributes $7 directly to elk management efforts, habitat restoration, and scientific research. Wouldn’t it be great if our application fees also covered our coffee expenses? I could use a caffeine boost while tracking elk!
The Future is Bright: What’s Next?
For those looking to gear up for the next hunting season, mark your calendars! Applications for the 2026 elk hunt will open on March 1 and continue through May 31. The hunt itself will kick off on Saturday, October 17. As summer quickly approaches, we encourage potential hunters to brush up on their skills—and maybe practice their elk calls—so we can have a record year next time around! Just remember, elk don’t respond well to a bad rendition of “Old MacDonald Had a Farm.”
