Welcome to the World of Junior Hockey!
December is always an exciting time in the world of hockey, and for fans in Wisconsin, this year brings even more cheer with the announcement that Logan Hensler and Luke Osburn, both defensemen for our beloved Wisconsin Badgers, have made it to the preliminary roster of the U.S. National Junior Team. These guys are not just stretching their muscles; they’re stretching the limits of what’s possible for Badger hockey!
March of the Badgers
Let’s paint you a vivid picture: Logan Hensler and Luke Osburn are like Batman and Robin in hockey jerseys, ready to take on the world at the upcoming IIHF World Junior Championship from December 26 to January 5 in the frosty tundra of Minnesota. Camp kicks off from December 15 to 23, and each player is training like their ice skates are on fire to secure a spot on the final 25-man roster representing Team USA.
How Did They Get Here?
Every story has its heroes! Hensler, a sophomore, has already racked up a whopping seven points with three goals in just 13 games this year, showing us that he knows where the net is! His career soared when he had a breakthrough game with three points against Ohio State—a real hat trick straight out of the fairy tales! Meanwhile, Osburn, the rookie, made a splash in his debut season, boasting two goals and six points, making him a strong contender for budding talent. Two Badgers making the team would tie a magical string of 10 consecutive years with at least one Wisconsin player at the World Juniors—because once you're a Badger, you're always a Badger!
The Road Ahead
With the World Junior Championship right around the corner, there’s tons of fanfare surrounding the entire event, as it features the best under-20 teams from around the globe. How thrilling would it be to hear “The Badgers are coming!” echo in the arena as our young athletes skate into the limelight? Better pack the hot cocoa because it’s going to be a chilly but fiery competition.
A Legacy of Talent
Wisconsin has a rich history with the National Junior Team, holding a strong record since 1988. Did you know a Badger has participated in every tournament since then? That’s right! Our state has given birth to NHL legends and international champions, each one leaving an amazing mark as bright as a freshly polished skate blade. In 2004, we cheered louder than ever as Team USA clinched gold, with three Badgers on the roster. It’s like our very own superhero squad!
