The Face-Off Finale: A Game to Remember
Milwaukee was buzzing on the evening of December 29, 2025, as the No. 2 Badgers faced off against the reigning national champions, the No. 7 Western Michigan Broncos, in the Kwik Trip Holiday Face-Off championship game. It was a showdown that had fans on the edge of their seats, but the Badgers came up short with a score of 4-1. But hey, they gave it their all, which deserves a round of applause, or at least a high-five from that one guy who always spills his nachos at the game.
The Early Spark from Zelenov
In true sports fashion, it was the young blood, freshman Vasily Zelenov, who lit the lamp for the Badgers first, putting them up 1-0 in the first period. He scored off a rebound that had even the toughest goalies reeling. Unfortunately, just when we thought this game could steer in Wisconsin's favor, the dreaded momentum shift occurred, just like that moment when you realize the pizza delivery guy forgot your garlic bread.
The Controversial Equalizer
Midway through the second period, Western Michigan evened the score on a play that left many Badgers supporters scratching their heads. After UW goalie Eli Pulver made an initial save, a scramble in front of the net resulted in a goal credited to Zaccharya Wisdom after quite a kerfuffle in the crease. Wisconsin challenged the goal, believing the play should have been blown dead. Alas, the goal stood—much like a bad hair day that just won't go away.
Missed Opportunities: The Third Period
With the game tied, the Badgers entered the final period hoping to convert on some late-game chances. They had a power play opportunity that looked promising, but Wisconsin couldn’t find the back of the net. It was like preparing a big family feast only to discover everyone’s already had lunch. Captain Ben Dexheimer rang one off the post, while a breakaway attempt by Christian Fitzgerald was squashed by Broncos goaltender, Hampton Slukynsky.
More Drama: Late-Game Struggles
Just as Wisconsin's hopes of staying in the game began to strengthen, the Broncos secured an empty-net goal from William Whitelaw, making it 3-1 with about three minutes left. Shortly after, Grant Slukynsky netted the final goal, cementing the loss for a disappointed Badgers team. Sometimes, defeats come with a side of empty-netters, and it’s too sour a taste to swallow.
Reflecting on the Game: Coaches and Players
“We had opportunities, but we just didn’t capitalize when it mattered,” said Badger coach Mike Hastings, echoing the sentiments of many fans who probably wanted to throw their hats in response to those missed chances. Despite the loss, Hastings praised his team’s effort: “It was a good hockey game,” he added. And while losing isn’t part of the game plan, that’s why they call it sports and not life—because life doesn’t always come with a scoreboard!
Upcoming Challenges
The Badgers will take this tough loss and look ahead to their upcoming matches against Alaska Anchorage on January 9th and 10th at the Kohl Center, where fans can help cheer them on and hopefully lift their spirits. And speaking of spirits, let’s hope there’s a little more ‘cheers’ and a lot less ‘jeers’ from the home crowd this time!
